Top household energy tips

Simple changes can reduce energy use and improve comfort. Use this list as a practical starting point.

  • Review your electricity and gas tariffs periodically—shopping around can make a material difference.
  • If you have access to time-of-use tariffs (day/night or smart meter plans), schedule high-load appliances when rates are lower.
  • Submit meter readings to avoid estimated bills.

  • When replacing appliances, consider energy labels and lifetime running costs—not just purchase price.
  • Only boil the water you need. A kettle “level window” can help avoid overfilling.
  • Use lids on pots. The microwave is often more efficient than a full-size oven for small quantities.
  • Keep fridge/freezer door openings short and check door seals.

  • Wash full loads where possible and reduce wash temperature where suitable.
  • Spin-dry effectively before tumble drying. Better yet, air-dry when practical.
  • Check your machine’s eco settings; longer cycles can use less energy overall.

  • Use efficient LED bulbs and turn lights off in unoccupied rooms.
  • Choose fittings and lampshades that direct light where you need it.
  • Task lighting (desk/floor lamps) can reduce the need for high-output ceiling lighting.

  • Insulate your hot water cylinder and exposed hot water pipes where accessible.
  • Use timers and thermostats effectively; avoid heating water for longer than needed.
  • Consider zoning and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) for better room-by-room control.
