Top household energy tips
Simple changes can reduce energy use and improve comfort. Use this list as a practical starting point.
- Review your electricity and gas tariffs periodically—shopping around can make a material difference.
- If you have access to time-of-use tariffs (day/night or smart meter plans), schedule high-load appliances when rates are lower.
- Submit meter readings to avoid estimated bills.
- When replacing appliances, consider energy labels and lifetime running costs—not just purchase price.
- Only boil the water you need. A kettle “level window” can help avoid overfilling.
- Use lids on pots. The microwave is often more efficient than a full-size oven for small quantities.
- Keep fridge/freezer door openings short and check door seals.
- Wash full loads where possible and reduce wash temperature where suitable.
- Spin-dry effectively before tumble drying. Better yet, air-dry when practical.
- Check your machine’s eco settings; longer cycles can use less energy overall.
- Use efficient LED bulbs and turn lights off in unoccupied rooms.
- Choose fittings and lampshades that direct light where you need it.
- Task lighting (desk/floor lamps) can reduce the need for high-output ceiling lighting.
- Insulate your hot water cylinder and exposed hot water pipes where accessible.
- Use timers and thermostats effectively; avoid heating water for longer than needed.
- Consider zoning and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) for better room-by-room control.
